Have a 1987 50 HP FORCE outboard which runs great for it's age. Need some help repairing the electric choke. Choke solenoid appears to be non-functional. Push in key should activate the choke but does nothing. Currently I manually close the choke to start. Any advise or step-by-step to check this out and hopefully repair??
Thanks
If you have a test light, connect one lead to ground and the other to terminal "C" on the ignition switch (green or yellow & black wire). With the switchin the on position, push in the key and the test light should come on. If it doesn't, you can suspect the switch. If it does, the next check is at the solenoid by the carburetor.
At the solenoid. do the same test with the same colored wire and ground. If it doesn't light then you have to find where the wire is broken. If it does, the solenoid itself is next. For the solenoid, you'll need an ohmmeter.
Disconnect the wire and connect one lead of the meter to the terminal on the solenoid and the other to the case of the solenoid. You should get a reading of 0.5 to 1.5 ohms. If you get no reading, replace the solenoid.
Hope this helps. If you need more help, PM me.
