I haven't, but have often thought of rigging up a dead eel the same way. Might try it the next time I catch an eel in my creek.

I got to thinking ,,, ha big trouble there ,, but anyway ,, i was curious if anybody had tried to rig a dead spot similiar to the way you would a ballyhoo for trolling for stripers? may be pain is the a** but seems it would work

I'm not sure how you could rig them so that they wouldn't spin. They aren't as streamlined as a ballyhoo. If you figure out a way let us know. We trolled dead eels rigged on a tin squid last year. THe blues loved cutting them in half.
What do you think of this>>>>>>>>>>>>![]()
Doing the spiral death spin they would washout rather quickly
I have not tried spot but have caught fish with refrozen ballyhoo in the spring. I don't use them offshore after they have been defrosted but using them as the light lure on a double bucktail or in a umbrella rig has caught fish.
How to troll an eel -> Eel Rigging
im gotta try some things out and if i come up with something well let everyone know ,,, i agree the spinning is gonna be a problem,,, maybe if you put enough let under there lip it will keep them straight ?
we need to come up with a artificial spot head , that way you could just rig it with a spot body minus the head , with a good plastic lip that would keep it straight and almost be totally real ?
We tried them a lot a few years ago - problem is that they dont have enough action at slow speeds. Maybe if you used that medievil torture device pictured above turning it into a Ballyhoo stretch it would have action but by themselves ballyhoo dont have near the action that the shad bodies do.
We did try split tail mullet and those worked very well. Plenty of action and lots of bites BUT really didnt out perform the shads enough/ to justify the work or expense.
