Default live bait rigs: two rod technique

Hello! This is my first post here and I need some help.
I'm interested in learning the ropes of the specialized technique of fishing a live bait rig with two rods at the same time. I want to use this when pier fishing. One rod is used to cast out a heavy sinker, presumably as far out as you can get it. The other rod is the fighting rod with the live bait rig. The live bait rig is sent sliding down the anchor line of the first rod, when the fish bites, the rig breaks free from the anchor line and the angler fights the fish. All this I get. What I don't get is how the live bait rig and fighting line is attached to the anchor line that lets it break away when a fish bites, but allows it to also stay on the anchor line while sliding down to the water.
If anyone is familiar with this technique, please let me know how it's done first, and then let me know whether it's worth the trouble, whether it works, or if something else is better.
I'm going for the biggest fish I could possibly catch off a pier (Kiptopeke) in mid October.

    Thanks for the help!

They use a shower curtain hook as a slide on the anchor line and a rubber band tied to the baited line hooked in the shower curtain hook. The baited line is usually lowered on the anchor line until the live bait just touches the water and struggles to go deeper. When the fish hits the bait the rubber band breaks and you are just fighting the fish.

Sometimes they weight the curtain hook also.

Make sure you use a spider weight on the anchor line so it will dig into the sand or it will not hold solid.

    thanks for your reply!

so it's an actual shower curtain hook that's used? The kind you hang your shower curtain in your bathroom up with, and not some fishing jargon that means something else?

Is this a spider weight? If not, what is?

Right on both accounts ..... I'm sure other stuff is used for the slides but shower hooks are used .... can't use the same ones too many times because they rust and the plastic one will get cut and sometimes hang on the anchor line.

this is great information rhahn427! Just wondering if anyone has any other information on this technique? other tips or tricks? Is it worthwhile? How has it worked for you? Is there a better technique for catching large fish off of piers?

    Thanks!

I googled all sorts of combinations of pin rig, king rig, etc, and the only decent thing I came up with was this:
    Avalon Pier Fishing Tips-King Rig
which is good enough, I guess.

I think I've got enough info to figure this out, but is a float of some kind used on the live bait rig anywhere?

Yes, put a bobber between the weight and the "top" bead - the one closest to the bend in the pin. You need to determine what size weight and what size bobber works for you where you fish.
