Just got a new reel for Christmas and was wondering what pound test line most of you use when eeling? Also mono or braid? Thanks for any help and Merry Christmas

Check out the chumlord podcasts on eeling. They are the shizzle.
My setup, 40lb braid, about a 50' top shot of 30lb mono. 4' 50lb leader.

I have been using my fresh water rod and reels for eeling. Diawa sea line 27's LC with big game mono 20LB test, with 5' 20LB FC leader, and haven't lost one hook up. Fish ranging in size from 20 LBS to my best fish to date a 53 LBER. Its all in the Drag setting.

The easiest answer is simply this. Whatever line test that your comfortable with and adjust your drag accordingly We have caught them on as little as 2lb test without any great issues. Just rember when using lighter line either plan on keeping the fish or spend extra time reviving them to enc=sure their survival.

It all depends on where you are doing your eeling. Open water, anything you want as long as you know how to set your drags and control your thumb. Around the bridge or other structure You can get away with as little as 30 lb, but be prepared to loose some fish.

I fish with 20 lb test mono for open water eeling. In my opinion Stripers do not fight that hard no more than 20 lb test is required. Go with a six foot 50 lb test leader. When using 20 lb test it is also critical to use thin, ultra sharp hooks. The thinner the better so the hook will penetrate easier Gamakatsu 6/0 or 7/0 octopus circles are thin and sharp.
