Default Cold Temps Tonight - Protect Your Boats

Going to be a hard freeze tonight. If you're like me, you don't completely winterize your boat and put it away for the winter. But we should do partial winterization to protect them. Run the pink antifreeze through all your fresh water lines. Drop your outboards down so all the water can drain out. Put some heat in your bilge if you can. This is not a complete list of things to as there are many different types of boats out there, just think through your situation and take some precautions.

Thanks for the reminder Mike. I put the anti-freeze in the freshwater washdown system yesterday (~ 50-50 ratio) so I hope that's good enough and also put the porti-potti in the garage. That's about it for my little boat.

Good tips. If you have plumbing running out to dock, especially PVC...try to clean the lines (compressed air) or you WILL be re-plumbing your dock when it warms up.

Good post Mike. I already winterized my fresh water system, but I think I'll make a trip to the boat today and put some antifreeze in the bilge..

Shut those "seacock" valves (thru hull) if they freeze and crack the can be an issue!

For you I/O guys might want to give this a try. I have used one for a while now and it works good. Put it on the bottom of your oil pan.

I decided to just winterize the boat and be done with it. Haven't been able to get out but twice so far this month--due to the crappy weather (winds). Took a couple of hours to fully do the job on my boat with an I/O, which included removing all of the electronics and the fishing tackle bags, etc. Fogged the engine, drained and replaced the water in the with a 3 to 1 mixture of anti-frreze, WD 40 sprayed on all metal surfaces of the engine, batteries removed and stored, prop removed shaft greased and replaced, checked outdrive fluid (A OK). Done for another cold winter. Good Luck you guys!!
