Sassafrass wildfowl

I inherited a small cottage on the Sassafrass a few years ago and would like to duck/goose hunt that area. I have been hunting in DE and NJ for over 30 years (since I could carry a gun). From the information I could find there is one county area at Grove Neck to hunt and that we would need a daily permit. The only other information I could find had to do with a yearly filing for a blind site. My property does not fit their requirements. There are several good and shallow creeks entering the Sassy that look promising, but I do not want to run afowl of other hunters who may have blind sites already filed. Does anyone have some suggestions as to places to hunt on the Sassy that are open to the public. If not, how does one search the records about blind sites. Also, I have a boat blind and more good decoys than are necessary if someone wants to explore the hunting with me, let me know. We could also use the cottage for a hot meal when the birding slows down. I will be back down there on weekends for the catch and release striper season on the flats.

There is public hunting land at Turner's Creek which may not be far from you (can't remember the specific name) and a new large property will be opened up on Grove Neck, near the current small one. You cannot do "squatters rights" blind licensing on the Kent Count shoreline, you need the required shoreline (250yds?) but you can on the Cecil County shoreline, though I imagine much of it is blocked out by the landowners.

Are you in kent or cecil? Where about on the river?

Not sure what your property is like, but you mention that it did not meet the 250 requirements, if you hunt your property it does not have to meet the 250 yd requirement but will need to meet the safety zone requirements. Do a search on the DNR website and you should find more information.

The shack is on the Cecil County side of the river very close to Grove Point. I can certainly get to Turner's Creek, but thought that there was a hunt club working there and did not want to infringe on their hunting. Is there public hunting on Turner's creek, and if so, where?

I am thinking about hunting some of the state land at Stemmers Run, Grove Point and up by the Canal to get my feet wet with MD hunting. Any advice (to keep me out of trouble and to not waste time) would be welcome.

Check the state property maps out for the wma's. You need to register in Bel Air for your tresspass permit, then it is a matter of calling in your blind days. Check the on-line MD regs. They are pretty self explanatory with regard to gunning rig requirements. Cecil county allows squatter blinds to be posted on non-registered shore lines on an annual lottery basis. Kent County does not allow this at all. Land, if not public wma, is private. Not like NJ or N DE where floating in the tidal water is legal. Rules are pretty specific.
