Today was our 9th extreme long range deep drop trip of the 2009 campaign. Our Co-captain was Capt. Tim Cannon of Virginia Beach, Virginia. The 1st Mate was Mr. Justin Creef of Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The party was a walk on
(a/k/a "put together") trip for a total of 14 anglers led by legendary VA Beach deep dropper Mr. Glen Caldwell, who scored a Grand Slam), Mr. Keith Tolley and Mr. David Hoang (quickly becoming rising extreme long range deep drop stars), world famous fishing and adventure book author Mr. Martin Freed from Alaska, Mr. Mike Lightfoot and son of the Northern Neck, Mr. Sean Douglas, Mr. Patrick Valent, Mr. Don Riley, Mr. Derrick Thrappas and guest, Mr. Robbie Lapham, and Mr. James Anderson and guest.

It was a really nice morning with slick calm (pronounced "cam") seas. It got a bit choppy in the afternoon and the ride in was the same ol' sporty SSW chop side to rumble against a 4 day old NNE swell washing machine. Ahhhh yesss...the familiar bellowings of "Ralph", "Earl", and "The Car Salesman" from the aft deck on the ride in...wouldn't be an extreme long range deep drop without them. It's like the "call of the wild" from the dense woods as you retreat home with your tail between your legs, your body aching from head to toe, and your eyes straining for the lights of the VA Beach oceanfront...

We fished for big fish for most of the day with a brief ill fated foray into the BSB grounds. The 5 day NE blow lowered the Ocean surface temp. 9 degrees since our trip on 2/25/09. This, along with the increasing winds and drift speed was a recipe for a good old fashioned ho down Dawg Shark fest. Some men would have cowered into the fetal position with incessant double dawg dare ya's from 500+ feet but this bunch just dug in with more determination. Those beady little slant green eyes with the knashing nubs curling their leathery little tails and spining anything in sight wakes me up in a cold sweat nightly screaming ...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

But the determination of this 14 man crew paid off in a BIG WAY to wit:

12 gargantuan Snowy Groupers up to 57 pounds
1 portly Wreckfish
5 corpulent Red Hake up to 7 pounds
22 fat Black Bellied Rosefish
33 tasty Black Sea Bass
7 chunky Blueline Tilefish
6 hideous Conger Eels
1 beautiful Yellowfin Bass
10,643,249,615 Dawg Sharks

I'll tell ya this crew took a real whoopin', but we got some great fish and great pictures. An unbelievable effort beyond the extreme, for sure. We even got a nice massacre shot for you PETA wannabees - stay tuned!

10+ billion Dawgs?! Those are U.S. Guvmint kinda numbers! Just think, if you could keep 'em and get $1 apiece, the Jil Carrie could maybe fund a little more than 1% of the bailout. Sounds like a fun trip.

Jim, Thanks for another great trip. I ache all over. Arms from pulling "double doggies" and grouper from 600ft, legs from bracing myself on the rocky sea road home. This was my 8th or 9th trip with you and as always its a blast. I've met some very nice and very serious fishermen that have become friends. Hoping to see the "braggin" pictures soon. Wish you another successfull trip on Saturday.

Thanks for the trip. I didnt catch the numbers like i wanted but the cam seas of the deep at first light made it all worth it. Then my first whale spotting just added to the bonus. I guess the electric reel and sleeping all the way thru the washing-machine ride home made a safer trip back to baltimore. I'll get them the next time. BTW grouper and tile on the grill is super-duper-fantastic. I'lltry the blackbellied later this week. Good luck on your next trip.
