My buddy and I are headed down to sanibel/captiva next week. We are staying on the bay side of captiva. We have got a guide for the day, are getting kayaks and will get out on the beaches. I have done searches here and really appreciate the info folks have posted. Any general advice/info would be really appreciated. Thanks, Sam alias ihatework
Sam - I'm vacationing in Bonita Springs (just south of Sanibel) RIGHT NOW! The Snook bite off the beach at sunrise/sunset is GREAT. DOA Glow shrimp casted just beyone any break there might be is producing. Also some specks on the beach. You can actually sight-cast to the snook... some BIG BOYS are there. Use heavy leader (30 lb. florocarbon). I'm live-baiting the mangroves from a kayak and catching snook, reds and have jumped a couple tarpon (not sure what I'll do if a big one stays on the hook?!?).
Renting a boat tomorrow, fishing with a friend on his boat late this afternoon... and kayaking/wade fishing the balance of the time... oh yeah, and of course, taking the wife to the beach, dinner, etc.
Hey Pete - Didn't get up with Greg yesterday. BUT, jigged up some bait and tossed live shrimp and grunts to the mangroves out of the kayak this morning... 3 snook (21-25"), 2 Reds 23" and 25", and hooked something I never saw and couldn't stop. To tell the truth, I don't think he knew he was hooked... thinking a Jewfish. Gotta say, the kayak "Sled Ride" was cool.
