Depends on the area that you are trying to contain them in. I have 2 dogs that use the Dogwatch 3000 (I think). Not too cheap but fairly easy to install. Only downfall is that if they break through, they will be reluctant to coming back because they will get shocked again. On the few times I had a breakout, they sat just outside the burried line waiting to be let back in. Cabela's has a pretty neat wireless system that shocks them if they leave the "circle of safety". You have about a 90' radius from the transmitter (that is just plugged into an outlet) and if they leave that get zapped until they return to the circle. Portable, no wires to install, and pretty cheap (about $300). With the wire, you can decide exactly where you want to allow the dogs to roam. Hope this helps. Whichever you decide to go with, they make dog ownership a lot easier.
I've had a PetSafe underground for about 10 years. Had to get the mut the heavy duty collar. Works.
I did my research and Innotek makes numerous models under different names. DEFINITELY check out Ebay for these. People buy them and never get around to installing, or their puppy grows up and they don't need it anymore or whatever.
I've bought two stystems, collars and all for $50 or less each. This made it so I could surround our full acreage and both dogs could have a collar for MUCH LESS than buying a new system. Also, innotek has a lifetime warranty. One of mine got hit by lightning, and they replaced it for a flat $35 fee.
The system works best if you go through the little training excercise they give you in the instructions. After that, they just won't leave. If you just leave them on their own to figure it out, it's not as effective.
They work great. I didn't bury mine, except at the gate, I just zip-tied it to the fence, and it's excellent. Best wishes.

Innotek makes great products. Only problem I had was my pointer ran out so fast it wouldnt stop him but hed come back slowly and hed hear the tone and stop.

I just put in the Petsafe system, about $100 at Home Depot. Installed 2 weeks ago, the dog got shocked 2-3 times and now wont leave the yard. I still have the flags up and she knows not to cross the line!!
Just a side story.
A friend of mine had a Golden Retriever, put the fence underground and trained the dog according to the book. All was well for about a year and then the dog started to get through the fence. After a lot of observation, it turned out the dog had learned to go near the fence and listen to the buzzer. Once the buzzer had run the battery down, the dog knew he could get through the fence.

Yeah, Katie did the exact same thing! Too smart for her own good! So now, I change the battery several times a year. Still.... she's waiting.... waiting...
