I was hoping someone out there had info. on the pasquotank river/ albemarle sound area. My folks are moving on the river about 3 miles south of the Coast Guard station, and they have easy boat access to the pasquotank. Do stripers/flounder/trout come up that far, or do we have to get into the albemarle to saltwater fish? I know that upriver there is some largemouth action to be had (above eliz. city), but I know nothing about the saltwater action.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated--

Yes.... winter rock up to 22" is the norm. sometimes a little larger, summer rock up to 18". Rock are caught from the sound all the way past Eliz. City. Small Flounder with a hook and line, larger ones with a gill net. Trout sometimes in the sound with hook and line. Also black drum are around right at your folks back door. Plenty of other fish all around that area.
What about blueclaw crabs? any good. Can a recreational fisher use pots or just traps? I am intrested in the answers as well as I will be moving to South Mills and more of a saltwater guy then fresh water.
I asked Marine Fisheries and she said, if you are on your property one pot tied to pier or bulkhead or Rec. / Commericial license = 5 pots and 100 yds gill net anywhere. $35 a year for license.
Thanks for the info. Why are only small flounder caught on hook and line and larger in gill nets? I have heard this before, but I don't understand it. What other species are available? Croaker/spot? Are the stripers migrating to spawn, or is there a resident population?
Sorry for all the stupid questions . . . I couldn't find a tackle shop down there that seemed interested in answering any questions.

I think its a little of both on the rock. You can beat the stumps in the summer and catch a little larger rock or small rock schooled up. The larger ones are resident and the small ones are always on the move, I think they are too small to spawn. Yes you can catch small to fair size spot and croaker. Not sure about the flounder except everthing in the nets are bigger when you set 1000 yds of net you catch alot of fish and the mesh size lets the small ones thru.
Hey I'am no expert so someone else can jump in anytime!
Happy hours[wink]
Thanks again, fishtales. I know the only way to figure it out is to wet some line, but it really helps to know where to start, or at least which fish to target. Can anyone recommend a helpful tackle shop in the eliz city area?

Fishtales mentioned black drum in the pasquotank-- do they make a run in the late summer/early fall like they do up in va. beach? later? year round?
Still trying to find someone who fishes for flounder in the pasquotank/albemarle-- anyone?
