Default Time to upgrade to a new vice!

Its about time for me to upgrade to a new vice. I have currently been using the basic one from cabelas. Just got it to start out. I think I have all ready worn it down! I would like to look at getting something of better quality and that will last.

I have had my eye on the "Peak rotary vice". I have seen it at cabelas and Anglers. Can anyone suggest a vice that is reasonably priced? I will be tying saltwater flies so I will need something that has big jaws.

Yeah I too am in the market for a finer vise, the peaks look nice but i kinda got my eye on the Renzetti traveler. I think it sells for 189.00. The Anvil apex looks like a nice vise too but it doesn't come with the bobbin holder attachment, nor do I think they offer one. Good luck.

Ya, I also looked at the travler vice. I liked it and I know the quality is going to be great on it. I want to make a trip somewhere to see it. I saw the peak at Anglers and I know that CCA members now get 10 or a 15%discount now there. I want to make a trip to the Salsbury fly shop soon. I have been over there 3 times lately but they were closed. Weird hours. I will have to dedicate a trip just to the shop.

    Default Peak vs. Renzetti

I have both the Peak and the Renzetti Travler and while the peak is a nice vise...I prefer the travler. The jaws are better and they hold better than the Peak.

I've heard good things about griffin vises.

I have a NorVise - It has met my needs well, but a bit more pricey.

I've been tying on a Traveler for almost 15 years...the one I originally bought had the old screw-jaws, so I replaced them with the (now standard) cam jaws. For the price, it has been incredibly durable and has done all that I need. If you are not ever going to tie commercially, or in huge bulk numbers of flies, it's perfect...buy one, you won't be sorry.

I have had a Peak Rotary for a few years and tie mostly all saltwater flies. Its built like a tank, and holds the hook very well. I dont really tie any flies bigger than 2/0 and the standard jaws work fine. I bought the saltwater jaw with mine but have never needed it. there are alot of high quality vices out there. Good luck with what ever you decide on buying

I've used a Regal vise for many years. It's bullet proof, but more expensive than the Peak or Traveler. They say it will hold a 4/0 hook, and some it will. Depends on the hook. I tie a lot of bass flies & use worm hooks, and they're often lighter wire than saltwater of similar size, so it holds a 4/0, and even a 5/0. Most of my saltwater flies are 3/0 or smaller, and it will hold them.

It does hold hooks very well, there's a groove in the jaw so hooks can't slip. I think the basic rotary vise sells for about $220, but they have different versions.

I have tied commercially, for 15 years, & the Regal is a vise that will hold up.

Any hooks I use that my Regal won't handle, I have a home made vise made from a vise grip plier. It's not rotary, but I've put 12/0 jig hooks in it & have broken 7/0 hooks with it.
