    Default fuel pump?

    I was out running the boat around today (1983 Suzuki 85hp) and it started bogging down at medium and high rpms. The higher the rpms the faster it would bog down. We just had it in the shop and they said it was the 3rd coil, so they replaced it. Took out today and very similar issue still persists.

    So we squeezed the bulb 2x and it was back up to speed for a bit. Ran for couple hours or so just squeezing it when it would slow down. Could the fuel pump be sucking all of the fuel possible and there is a collapse in the line or obstruction somewhere like at the fuel tank switch? This happens on either tank. Or do you guys think it is the fuel pump (it looks like a mechanical pump) giving me problems now?

    We checked the filters again and all hoses have been replaced.

    I would check all hose connections to be sure they aren't leaking or loose so as to allow the engine to draw air into the hose. Check to be sure the carb/carbs are mounted tight so they are not allowing air into the fuel system (hoses). Double check your timing at idle and at 2500 rpms to be sure it is advancing the timing correctly. Good luck, Bob

    unbolt the fuel pumps from the block one at a time and squeeze the bulb if fuel come out the back hole on the pump this means there is a hole in the diaphram, and possibly causing it to not pump enough fuel or pump too much fuel causing it to dump the extra fuel into one of you cylinders

    I had this exact same problem happen to my boat (85 hp yamaha) and it had every one stumped for awhile. Turns out one of the balls in the fuel primer bulb had come loose and when the engine got up speed and starting sucking gas real hard it would pull the ball into the fuel line hose hole, clogging it up and the engine would bog down, just like when you run out of gas. When I removed the primer bulb, I could hear the rattling of the ball in there. Took forever to figure it out but ended up fixing my problem for 8 bucks at K-Mart. Worth checking for a cheap, easy fix.
