    Default Correct lower unit lube

I have a 1997 Evinrude 90 hp outboard, and bought some Type C lower unit lube from West Marine for a change. I was told at the store it was good for most motors, but reading the back of the container I didn't see where it covered my engine. Can I use it? The manual only refers to buying the OMC lube. Thanks.

    NO!!
type c is similiar to hydraulic fluid & it was used on the older (late 60's & early 70's) motors that had a hydraulic-electric shift & straight electric shifts.

some people substitute transmission fluid for type c fluid

it is not for use in your late model manual shift outboard

Thanks RJ, I got similar response from my mechanic. The back of the bottle I got also said it was good for older outboards, but I don't remember the years.

Will have to say it was a new guy at West Marine that sold it to me. They're usually pretty good.
