    Default Teleflex Steering Help

The steering on my boat has gotten a little stiff. It has manual Teleflex steering. I know how to get the cable out of outboard, but the problem is that I do not have enough room to get the cable out. It appears that I may have to take the motor off of the boat just to get the cable out to clean and grease it. Anyone got any suggestions? It seems like an easy job if I could get the cable out. Thanks for any help.

You have a few options All of which are to take the engine loose. You don't say how big of an engine, but the bigger the more you need a hoist to control it. My 70hp I was able to take it loose and leaving it locked in the down position then lift by the lower unit and tilt enough to get the cable out. The 175hp, I used an automotive engine hoist without any trouble. If you have room on the transom, you may be able to slide it over to one side and get enough room to pull the cable. I honestly would not attempt it with anything heaver than the 70hp( about 200# I guess.) If you try it, make sure the motor is laid over to one side. It is not nice when it is unbolted and flops over on its own.
    Good luck,
    be safe.

If grease will help you don't have to take it off.Disconnect your cable from your steering arm.Take the big nut loose on cable in side.Pull your cable out of motor all that you can.Put or force grease into tube that the cable runs thru.Keep doing this till you have it full. While doing this work your cable in and out by hand and by the steering wheel.I just did one like this and it was a 50% improvement. If dirt is insde your cable casing it will not help that out.It takes a little time but is easy to do. Good Luck
