You have a few optionsAll of which are to take the engine loose. You don't say how big of an engine, but the bigger the more you need a hoist to control it. My 70hp I was able to take it loose and leaving it locked in the down position then lift by the lower unit and tilt enough to get the cable out. The 175hp, I used an automotive engine hoist without any trouble. If you have room on the transom, you may be able to slide it over to one side and get enough room to pull the cable. I honestly would not attempt it with anything heaver than the 70hp( about 200# I guess.) If you try it, make sure the motor is laid over to one side. It is not nice when it is unbolted and flops over on its own.
