I HAVE A 2000 4.3 L EFI MERCRUISER STERN DRIVE. I AM LOOKING FOR AN ECONOMICAL FUEL COMPUTER. THE ONES I HAVE FOUND SO FAR (LOWRANCE/NAVMAN) SPECIFY CARBS ONLY.

    Default FUEL MONITOR/COMPUTER

I just recently looked into fuel computers. I purchased a twin scan system. I agree with the last post the only fuel computer that is worth purchasing is a flow scan. For a single engine if you just want total and burn rate the differance in price will be offset in a year's time. I wanted nmpg because i do a lot of offshore fishing. I figure it will take me 2yrs to pay for the units in fuel cost.

Floscan. I have the 5500 w/totalizer. Would not trade it for any other brand.

Just curious. What is the function of a fuel computer?

Mine (FloScan 7000 series) provides the following for a twin engine boat in one 3.125" instrument):

. Instantaneous fuel flow rate (gph) for each engine
. digital RPM for each engine
. Engine RPM sync (done graphically)
    . Fuel use totalizer (resettable)
. Engine run time hours per engine

Newer FloScan models include a GPS interface and provide real time MPG calculation, a very nice feature. Mine is about 10 years old, and doesn't have that feature.

If you care at all about fuel consumption and are trying to optimize performance, can't live without it, especially if you go offshore.
