    Unhappy Bay icing

Many of the tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay have been growing ice for a week or more.
As of this posting, the open Bay temperature at Thomas Point Light (TPL) stands at 34 degrees.
With the colder weather still to come later this week, it looks like the open Bay will begin icing as early as tonight.

Use the NOAA link above and watch the ice accretion field this week...
The higher the value, the faster ice 'grows' in the Bay.

For those with boats still in the water, it's time to get those ice-eaters set and running!

There goes my pickerel fishing hopes.

Last year - there was a lot of ice but oddly - the Patapsco was open. Not sure if all the commercial ships/tugs or the various warm water discharges - or a combination kept it open.

The ramp at Fort Armstead gave access.

Looks now like the deep freeze, and the associated ice accretion, won't happen at least for another 24 to 30 hours.
There is still time to catch a fish or two!

Few years ago - the bay was iced in for the polar Bear plunge. Some steel hulled boats got in close and broke up the ice so the plungers could get wet.
Lots of cuts/scrapes that day from the jagged edges.
