Default Stormwater remediation project nearly finished

I put up several previous posts about the stormwater drainage ditch restoration project being done in my community. With my travels and the bad weather, I have not had a chance to visit the site in the new year until I ventured there this afternoon. The project manager told me they were nearly finished. They brought in a huge amount of sand to fill in the deep canyon, then created a series of pools allowing the water to trickle downhill and filter through the pond bottoms.

The ponds are irregularly shaped and incorporate tree trunks, large rocks, and gravel to make a natural appearance. Most of the site has been covered with good soil and mulch plus grass seed. They have planted a few saplings thus far. I am looking forward to this spring and summer when the vegetation becomes more established.

Several photos are shown below. The project can be accessed downhill through the woods from my backyard. If anyone wants to check it out, let me know.

That was a serious amount of work to construct that drainage ditch. I hope the vegetation has a chance to get firmly established before a monsoon rain hits and washes it all away. Rocks, tree trunks, etc will certainly help - but nothing like a good hearty root system to hold the soil in place. Thanks for posting the pics, John.

Turned out great John. It is projects like this one that a lot of people don't see that little by little that help make a positive impact on the bay!

Maybe next spring, I can get a keg and host an SRRKC monthly meeting. After a field trip to see the project, we can sit on my deck and consume the beer.

P.S. This photo was taken in a German restaurant in Berlin on the same day you had the Hooters meeting.

John, have you had a chance to see how the project held up under this latest rain?

    Jeff -

I left early this morning on my 4th trip in 4 weeks. I will be back later in the week and hope to visit the site over next weekend.
