    Default Early Black Stonefly Hatch

My dad and I got out for a few hours this afternoon on our local limestoner. It was a bright and sunny day and the stoneflies were hatching in decent numbers. This hatch can be hit or miss. I've not really had much luck the past few years, but the trout were rising in good numbers today. We were using a #16 CDC black stone dryfly. Most of our luck was fishing down and across stream to rising fish. We caught 9 wild browns between the two of us in just under 3 hours. Most fish were small but I managed to land 2 nice trout.

Nice fish. I managed to hit the hatch 2 years ago on Big Hunting Creek; caught a number of browns on a #16 dark dun CDC & Elk. Not much luck so far this year - went once about 2 weeks ago and got 1 fish but didn't see any bugs.

    Nice.

The upper/lower Potomac in Montgomery County Maryland had them out in huge numbers the first weekend of March. It was the first stretch of warm weather after this miserable winter and they came out like I've never seen. The fish... well, I couldn't get them to play much. Even below the warm water discharge.

It's definately tougher on the freestones this time of the year. The limestone spring creeks are fishing great right now. I'm hoping to get up to State College this weekend to fish Spring Creek. It is a great feeling when you stumble upon a great hatch. We were skunked on the LeTort last weekend...

Saw a few today on BHC; small black caddis, too. Caught some brownies on top but the water's still a bit chilly; fun times anyway.

No kidding. Casting is a little more difficult by the time the Sulphurs are hatching.

SPatt: Glad you got a few today. I was stuck in the office all day. Looking forward to the weekend...
