Read this article about the standard bolts. Very informative. I got the stainless savage for Xmas from Mrs. Claus. It's true though the, trigger sucks. A real tack driver though. Replacement $80.00 and will be ordered.
Dux,
I think "done working" is right why a auto? I bought my son a 594 remington auto .22 last year and it shoots ok but not half as good as the Marlin bolt action with the tube magizine. This Marlin has a bullseye embedded in the stock about the size of a pencil eraser, it's by far the top of the line Marlin. Marlin makes two grades of guns so check them out. Bottom line, if you want a tight group get a Bolt action. The auto is ok if you want to hit a 4 inch circle at 50yrd, but the bolt action will hit a quarter at 50yrd.
I have shot several .17's and I really like them. They have a lot louder report than a .22. But for price of ammo to just go plinking ya can't beat a .22. I got a Ruger 10/22 and love it. Its shoots great and groups well even out to 100y.
Dux, I'm nt sure which .17 you are refering too.....Rimfire or Centerfire and there are several within those classifications as well. However, regardless of which one an auto is not your best best choose. The ammo is pricey, and I iamgine your accuracy will suffer a bit as well. I've got a .17HMR and I LOVE IT!! At 100yds it will litteraly split an "x"...which ever you buy stick with the bolt action and like someone already said if you want a plinking/fun gun get a Ruger 10/22.....lots or fun and quite accurate, plus you can get a 50round mag for it [smile]........
I my self have two .17HMR's by marlin with the bull barrels that I use for fox hunting and they are very accurate and deadly to a fox at 150-200yds!! BOLT ACTION IS THE WAY TO GO!
