herring fun with kids

Friend from No Va came down with his two boys and I met him at city dock with my youngest girl. Shoulder to shoulder on shore already as we did not leave until 1:30. Motored down river to a spot that has produced since I was a kid.
Anchored up and tied on Sabiki rigs for the kids rods. My 10 year old daughter was the first to hook up and we had found the herring. For the next couple of hours the fishing was fairly steady with smallish schools coming through every 10-15 mins or so. In addition to a small cooler of herring they caught some small white perch and a couple decent catfish on earth worms.

My friend is going to try and smoke the herring and I am curious to see how he does. My daughter and I only kept one catfish for dinner.

All herring were males so the run is still to come. Saw some shad caught at the dock when we finished up at the ramp. The river temp was 55.
