    Default 6/11/11 south hayes canyon

Well after a week of watching the sst and texting back and forth with my buddy about the sst's we decided to run to the south Hayes because we charted it to be the closest point of the brake at that time. So we got up at 1:00 sat morning and drove to oc were we had the boat in the water at 5:30 and pointed the nose east for a 2hr 45min run to the starting point of the brake. Needless to say the old single screw sailfish walked the dog as always averaging 32mph the whole way passing some of the fleet that had a jump on us. We were greeted at the 100 line with some nasty seas but we toughed it out and got the gear set. We plotter a course for trolling home and 20 min later had 4 rods go down and 3 came tight with only 3 on the boat, after about 15 min all 3 yft were in the box and gear was being set back out. well we 2nd guessed our self and moved to the balt with the rest of the fleet were we picked up nothing and headed back to hayes were we got our last yft of the day then set sail back to oc to finish our 23 hr day from home to home.

All fish were caught on pullers lures with meat.

    Nice work and hard core.

But that is one tangled mess of spreader bars in your third photo.

You passed me at the 100 and one of my crew noted hey that boat only had one engine...Ended up in the same spot later on the way to it had a BM on for a bit.Got 3 YF 2ofm around 50#s.Nice trip that water has moved fast now surrounding the Balto and near PM's also.curious what was your fuel burn we did identical trips I used 119 w/twins.

I burned 149 gal, I ran out burning 19/20 gph at 4700 rpm with a little tab, but i ran back in at 24/26 gph at 5100 with full tab and its a 2 stroke. i did not think it was that bad in rough water when i have a friend with twin 140 honda 4 strokes on a cat and he burns 120 with 2 motors that almost rate at the same combined hp

149 gal., Holy Cow! A trip like that with my old 25 Outrage and twin carbed 150 Johnny's would have burned 120-125gal max...I've seen plenty boats out there with 1 motor and I'm one of them now, no more double trouble...Good to hear you found the fish, nice pictures!

Can't believe how fast that water moved through. I didn't get out this time but I like reading the stories of those who did.

149gals! Those seas look tough. The fuel burn definitley goes up when it's rough. Make sure you guys leave yourself enough margin. The last 10-15% won't be enough to go up the fuel pick ups. Don't relay on the fuel gauge. They're never accurate on a boat.

Twins will never burn what a single motor burns for the simple fact that there is twice the propulsion to power it threw the waves , the single has to work its butt off non stop. I also look at it and say well there was 3 200lb plus guys, 160lb of ice, 200 gal of fuel, and so on plus its on a boat that should have twins.

We actually passed the brake because it had moved further in over night, I have all my fuel flow and level integrated into my Lowrance and have been through dozens of tanks and calibrations with the unit and on refill it is always within 3 gal +/-, and i called the daywith 93 gal left because i knew it would be a hard run.
