The only reason for this topic is it's the only thing Skip could think of at the time to see his name again, and again and again and again

Just a theory.... crabs have an open circulatory system ( no arteries and veins) Blood flow is gravity dependant utilizing with open sinuses for collection and distribution. You know when you turn a crab upside down it "goes to sleep". Maybe when the crabs area trapped upside down in the dipper for long periods of time, it stresses them enough as to yeild a higher mortality rate. Lower blood flow inside the crab combined with faster moving water past the crab making it hard for the crab to get oxygenated water in. Combo of those two can't be good.

I think dippers take the fun out of crabbing, but commercial guys are not out to have fun. So if it is legal, I guess go get em boys.

After speaking with a few comms about this issue I know that comms get less or simply won't get paid for auto dipper crabs. I have been told that the speed the line is run as well as the length of line are the biggest factors contributing to dead loss. I suppose that those who use it just accept the loss as a trade off for dipping. I have also seem some comms run a line off of the canopy to the net handle to relieve some of the stress when they keep the net in the water. This seems to be a good compromise.
