Nice job on the Whites Ben. Stinks that you pulled off those others, that would have made the grill happy but you had the action which is what counts! Boat is very nice!!
Shoved off in the dark at 4 am making our way down the Back River channel with a flashlight hitting the unlit daymarkers and using our GPS track and radar to full effect..very slowly.. finally get into some open water and slowly cruised out of the Chesapeake Bay with dawn rapidly approaching.
Got to the Norfolk Canyon 83 miles away and put lines in at about 7;20 am in the area where my buddy had caught some tuna the day before on the Southeast wall. Trolled in very calm water with no action for a while then jumped 2 white marlin. They basically popped up in front of us and started finning. We split through them and 10 seconds later the short rigger squid chain goes off..
When we slowed to fight that fish the other one piled on to the pink chugger hoo on the long rigger and now we have two on. Cleared lines and somehow managed to land both of them for a photo op.
Fished in the Canyon along the Northern and Southern walls. Trolled around skippies with no luck. Some others managed a few tuna further south of us but it seemed like a hit or miss thing with most on the radio complaining about no fish.
Trolled West into the Fingers area and got another White Marlin on another squid chain of all things...lol!. Hooked a mahi on a spreader bar and it got off part way to the boat.
Set it back out and immediately got a Yellowfin on same bar. Get him to the boat and just about to stick him.....leader breaks.
Get things back out and bam HUGE bull dolphin on the long rigger. Get him to the boat and just about to stick him.....hook pulls...bye. We were snakebit on meat fish today, but we raised some billls.
Got back to the dock at 7pm covered 242 miles and burned 152 gallons...not too bad. It was pretty calm all day until we got back to the mouth of the Bay and it was snotty all the way to the dock. Cleaned the boat and got to bed at 11pm.
3 for 3 White Marlin
0 for 2 on Mahi
0 for 1 on Yellowfin
