Looking for good squid for swords.

Looking for some good bait squid around the anne arundel county area. I heard All Green Market had nice big squid but they are currently closed. I haven't been to Shoreline yet and Frank's doesn't carry anything besides those small boxed ones. If worse comes to worse I will get a few boxes but I'd rather have 18" squid for my drift set-up. I wanna bring some dead one because I'm not sure if we'll be able to jig up some nice ones at night. I heard the squid have been few and far between. I'll be making a stop in VA Beach on the way to Hatteras so I can stop there if anyone knows any places. Any info/advice is appreciated. Also if anyone know a place to grab some good boston mackerel, let me know. Thanks!

Asian markets will likely have big squid. I can get the big inchers in my asian market in Hampton. I usually get my squid in Amory (757-722-1915) in Hampton a 33 lb box of summer squid is about $25 and you can pick out the big ones for bait. I've fished with the big 18 inchers but seem to get more hits on the 10-12 inch....probably a match-the-hatch thing.

Ron, I was in Gander Mountain tonight (ashland, va) and they had frozen whole squid about 16"-18". not sure how many though. Hope it helps.

Second on the asian (japanese, korean) markets. I've routinely found 12-20" squid at one near DC in VA - pretty awesome.

Interesting about the livies at night. Would love to hear more about how you fish those: rigging, depth, lights?

You would use squid jigs. They can look like anything from a squid to a tuna jig. They have 10-15 upward facing hooks. Kinds of like an upside down umbrella. Turn the lights on underneath your boat at night in the open water. Just wait and they'll be there...sometimes in swarms. Use the jig as you would any other besides high speed. Really fun on light tackle!

I've gotten bait from Frank's seafood in Jessup before. The seafood is sold for food - the squid / mackerel and butterfish are great quality.

Few dollars more then a bait store but IMHO - well worth it. Nothing worse then seeing brown / freezer burnt bait at 5:00 am and it is your only choice.

Never ceases to amaze me - guys spend $$$$$$ on fuel but skimp on a few dollars extra for top quality bait.
