Two big mistakes boaters make (1) They are not listening to 16 and (2) they have the TD lines up. The Navy will call on 16 with the position of the vessel in lat/longs and give the course heading and speed. If you don't have up 16 and you do not know your lat/long you can drive right into the live exercise which the Navy does not like.

Here lately they have come on to 68,72,79 as well.......if you look at the notice to mariners that are avail online they will state where a live fire shoot will happen with the date and times that square is hot.

    Mike,
You got it correct on both points. Almost all newer VHF radios have "dual-watch" so you can listen to whatever channel you like and still monitor 16.

is it too much to ask them to play outside of 1000 fathoms?

I think this is funny how it happened like a month ago. Had it been a senior O/E member on some stupid video or a racial/sexiest remark over heard this would have been viral. They almost blew a hole in a civilian boat. Thats nuts.

I hear ya. They are still testing Navy guns on THE POTOMAC RIVER! Dahlgren Naval Surface Warfare Center has an impact area just upriver from Colonial Beach. Years ago we were headed upriver to fish for stripers at the 301 bridge and a round impacted about 3/4 mile right in front of us. Turns out the guys on the range safety boat were either asleep or otherwise distracted. This was 25 years ago and there was no technology to warn boaters. I'm sure that there is a better system now but THE POTOMAC RIVER!

My parents had a house down in Colonial beach in the eights. I still remember the thud of the big guns firing off in the mornings. Quite the alarm clock.

The fired the Navy Captain over the incident. Not sure whether they fired him because they accidently shot at a civilian boat or because their gunnery is so bad they could not even hit a fishing boat. Bad joke....but seriously....while I'm glad the fishing boat was not hit, I honestly thought the Navy normally hits what they aim for.
