    Default Thanksgiving Bluefin @ Hatteras?

    Anybody got a clue whether I might reasonably expect a bluefin bite out of Hatteras during Thanksgiving week? I've heard reports that November can be pretty good for the big BFTs there. Already chartered a King Mackerel trip, and wondered if it would be smart to try finishing the day trying for the big tuna, or if I should "settle" for the little guys. Any wisdom would be appreciated!

    Historically, Thanksgiving is a bit too early for the blue-fins in Hatteras. Best bet is to fish for what the captain recommends, which could include kings, blackfins, wahoo, and more. Tight lines!

    @3400SS:
    I went a few years ago the day after Thanksgiving, on a boat named "For Playin'" out of Pirate's Cove. Got the shiite beat out of me by 12-ft seas, and came back with one little blackfin that might've gone 20 lbs. LOL Worked out to about $21 a pound for tuna: not my idea of a bargain or a good time. The mate did a lousy job, brought dull, rusty hooks, and the captain was a jerk- wasted a LOT of time trolling dead water between productive areas, rather than just picking up and going there. That's been my only really "bad" experience on the OBX. I read somewhere a couple of days ago that the commercial boats were already bangin' on the bluefin off of Hatteras, but I'm not clear on how this works "politically:" if the charter vessels go to the areas where those fish are, or what. The captain I'll be fishing with this time seems like a real standup guy, and definitely TALKS a good game, but hell, even I can do that 80% of the time. I'll certainly be posting a review here, whichever way it works out.

    Dr. Fish, The Monday that we went out we were on HogWild also out of pirates cove. The regular captain had gone to the Sunday Redskins game (hench the name of the boat) and was still a little under the weather from the game. The first mate was the captain for the day along with his buddy being first mate. 17 tuna in the boat hanging weight was 748 lbs. We fished the rockpile and was there all by ourselves. If I go out down there this fall/winter, I will tow mine down and go out.

    Years ago my son worked on the Wahoo running out of Hatteras Harbour marina. in Hatteras Village.
    That particular year the last of January and first 2 weeks in Feb were fabulous for bluefin.
    I went along to take pictures, there were 21 fish caught that day ranging from an estimated 200-600lbs.
    If I recall 1 small bluefin was kept.
    I am not sure how things are now for changes occur every season.
