    Default Fish On Stringer

Ive seen a lot of post about pole spears(Ilove my aluminum model) and not a lot about stringers. So heres some advice I learned this year.DO NOT repeat DO NOT put large fish on a stringer all facing the same direction. I felt a large yank that actualy broke my caribiner to my vest and had to chase 4 very large and healthy sea bass into a wreck to get it back and even then it was atug of war. These guys were real team mates. True it was a run of the mill caribiner but the yank was hard enough to pull me around. Since then if Im putting fish on I try to put multiple fish on some throught the mouth and some back thru the gills. Good hunting! Steve

I find when i put stringer right through the fishes eye socket they give up. I'll brain the flounder I get right away usually. Never thought a few sea bass would be that strong...thanks for the heads up.

If the spear did not kill the fish - I stick them in the head with a knife and give it a slight twist before putting on the clip stringer.

Not to wish you a visit from the tax man but a quivering fish is bad news and often draws them to you faster then a little blood will.
What could be more mundane than dying of old age or of natural causes when there is death by misadventure to be pursued ? Skip

+1 from what spynet & 27sailfish said. through the eyes, brain 'em, rip the gills-whatever you got to do. The tax man is always present, he took a full stringer from me this year and chased me out of my spot cuz I left one twitching. Not only does braining them right away prevent visitors, but it's also better for the meat. Also, triggers must be killed right away even though they come back to life and bite the shit out of you and other fish on the stringer.
I would avoid the caribiner route w/ the stringer, caribiners have a tendency to loop themselves out if in the right position. Mako makes a great stringer w/ a quick release or sharpen a 8" stainless bolt, drill a 2.5mm hole through it, loop a piece of 300# mono w/ a 4' lead, then a 2" loop on the long end and there you have your $25 rob allen comp stringer for $2.
