The downscan of the bridge is really cool.
I've gotten a few good downscan images with a lot of detail, but I seem to have more luck getting a detailed image with a sidescan presentaion.

    Default lowrance vs. hummingbird

I'm looking at this product as well and am trying to compare to the hummingbird models. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

    Oh,
there is a comparison to the HB ?
    Seriously...
You will get many of the same or similar features with a HB and for less, but you won't have as much up-ward mobility in terms of networking and future compatibility with new features that usually become available from Lowrance via software up grades.
Humming Bird- for me has always been an out of the box type unit with a lot of the functions not available to your input or tweaking.
The Lowrance is more of a "pro" type unit offering you a lot of customization to your needs.
The one thing you might consider is the hardware that is giving you what you see on the screen, eveidenced by the new capability to overlay your sidescan on the chart plotter! I guarantee you when they designed the LSS-1 module that was already in consideration and thus the LSS-1 is still the same.

To get you the downscan image the HB "interpolates" the left and right side scan images and creates a "Downscan" Image--in other words, they do it with software.

Lowrance uses a dedicated downscan crystal in the transducer- My thought would be that this produces better imaging, in a wider range of conditions. Can't say for sure because I have never seen the HB Downscan image.

In summary-- Lowrance- for the thinking man
HB- for the guy that just wants it to be there.

Just my thoughts, that's all they are worth.
    Ps,
I have the HDS-8 and learn something new every day,I haven't fully utilized all the capabilities yet in a full season of usage.I sure do wish that I had waited a year before I bought mine, but I am hopeful that some of the new features might be available to me via a software upgrade in the future.
