I was speaking of the audience here on TF, good people and well capable of making up
their own minds for the most part. Otherwise, your point is well taken.
I am not saying that the subsidies for other industries are perfect either. But we are talking commercial fishing, not everything else. I'd also suggest to you that there is not rec horse racing covering 93% of their cost vs commercial horse racing.
Concerning law enforcement. I would argue is an absolute necessity to have law enforcement and to argue that is a little crazy. Also, a lot of law enforcement does try to generate revenue to pay their costs through tickets, fines, etc... Ever get caught going 30mph in a 25mph in a small town and paying because it does not make sense to drive 5 hrs back to go to court.
I know this is way off target but i still promote federal gamefish status for the striper take the money out take the poaching out. No subsidies state or federally for any private or public companies that are in business for a profit. If you can't make a profit get out the business and someone will fill that void that can.

Jim, I know you're kind of a keyboard jockey, but... really? You never raced anyone on a horse? A bicycle maybe? How about a Big Wheel? Kayak? I'm just looking for a little common ground here.

I can see how the term recreational horse racing could confuse you. Sort of like recreational walking, or recreational rope-jumping. Kind of tough to get your mind around sometimes.

You haven't digressed. You're making a lot more sense now than you have yet. So let's keep the subject on rope-jumping where you've been from the start.
Shoot-straight, the majority of Md voters are stupid? Sounds like your guy lost. I'm sure your guy, who wasted the money donated by people who supported him, would have not been any better. Just look what he accomplished during his term. Dancer to run the Port authority.
Joe Francis, who poor mouth and got bought out, was typical of a group who's business made no money and continuely ask the state to bail his business out.Yet, when interviewed, always had bling hanging from his neck and $1,000.oo suits on. I always laughed when I heard him say that the racing industry was important to the state of Md. Kind of like everyone saying that waterman are important too. Sorry to be OT but I had to say something.
I guess somehow it relates to the post topic.
If they start getting monies from Commercials, will this reduce my Recreational Fees? Probably not. They will take one or the other to support State Pensions. Please wake up everybody.
Ok, Wahsed my hands so I can type.(just finished the popcorn)
does anyone realize or remember the underlying root cause for this discussion?
Kiddies-- the resources in the bay are in serious decline. The comms. refuse to acknowlege a diminishing harvest, and feel it's up to someone else to worry about the health of the bay.
Take a look at the new shows on TV the last few months aboput the shrimpers.--What a travesty-if the season doesn't improve the lively hood of all the shrimping industry in the area is at stake!
So, if they have a few more good seasons somehow that will make the resource come back on it's own ?And the by-catch mortality is horrendous, but the shrimp are more important.....
See any parallels ???
Now back to the Bay----Making the comms participate more in the recovery of the resource would be ideal, but for the most part all we are talking about is collecting enough renevue from the Comm. side so that we can catch the bad apples !!
And yes, the oyster industry going to aquaculture will require that areas of waterway be set aside for commercial beds--as long as they are paying leasing fees for the beds--No problem.I don't think they should get free access for the use of the water and run a for-profit business at the expense of everyone else--that's where we are now.
And to those that espouse the commercial worth of Rockfish in resturants--Stop serving Rock tomorrow and see who really cares.Let capitalish work things out.Having the state pay for your lively-hood is socialism or welfare--take your pick.
