How about these two slobs that were recently caught on a fly by "New Angle Fishing Company", on the same day on a "river in Virginia." No other word than that. These fish reportedly went 50 inches a piece which is the holy grail of muskie and I can't believe it's happening in Va. Wisconsin maybe but Virginia!! Time to man up and get out there.

Saw that Jon. The guys at Mossy Creek fly shop have been getting into some monster Muskies this winter. Dont know if it is from the James or the South Fork of the 'Doah. But according to their reports they are having a great year.

Good show. He even raffled off a trip with very inexpensive tickets. I think the chapter could have charged $10 a ticket instead of $1 a ticket but congrats to Flying Fish for the win. I would get out sooner than later and give these muskies an honest effort right now if I were you.

I bought a large articulated streamer made of arctic fox and rabbit with the CK baitfish tail as part of the lower articulated portion which helps move the flyin that “walk the dog” movement. He says black and silver are prime colors and that's what it was. He also had a few flies that were 12 inches long which I almost pulled the trigger on but spent my money on raffle tickets.

I did not like how he doesn't stop targeting muskie in the warm water when temps get above 80. He just said that if the fish shows no interest then they will leave it alone. It's often a sight casting thing in the summer. I feel that they will hit in almost any temperature and maybe fight themselves to death when water temps get over 80. Hasn't happened to me but that's because I took mid July through August off this year from targeting them. They are very predictable fish that time of year. Everyone always says November is the prime time to fish for muskies except they could be anywhere then. You literally have to cover every square inch of river.

He also uses 40 and 50 pound floro as bite tippet which I strongly disagree with. It just takes one bite off to ruin your season. You never know when that fish of a lifetime will show up. He also uses tieable wire leader from Rio that looked very attractive and preties rigs to flies and keeps them rigged and ready to go in a tarpon type box. He will actually use small, like #10 swivels. I asked if they had ever failed on him and he said no but I also see a weak link there.

I liked the strip jerk retrieve with the fly rod that when you strip in the line, you also give the rod a long jerk to violently move the fly as you strip it in. He recommended this for top water poppers or sliders and streamers. Only down fall is how do you set the hook when a fish hits on the jerk? Then he also said that once you are hooked up,several more hook sets should follow to drive the hook home.
If you get a follow and the fish didn’t commit, change up. Wind or front equals top watertime.

Books: Musky On the Fly by Robert Tomes

Chuck Kraft is an excellent fly tier, retired guide from theJames/New and will be tying at the National Capital Angling show on March 11that Georgetown Prep.

He guides all over the Potomac, has recently moved downriver to target the muskie but his specialty is the multi species trips where they float from Keyser to Cumberland and you have a legitimate shot at trophy wild brown trout, fingerling grown rainbow trout, trophy smallmouth, largemouth and tiger muskie. Even though they stopped stocking them he says they are still getting into them. Claims his client has hooked a 50 inch tiger in the same spot this past year on a buzz bait. Okay, I’m done now.

Good meeting Tom, thanks for the input. Good luck with the new boat.
