Hello all, a few buddies and I are looking to get a charter this spring out of Oregon Inlet to go after the Yellowfin. My question has two parts.
1) About when do they start to show up? I always figured around May is the hot time, but with this warm winter should we be looking earlier?
2) Ive never booked out of OI before, who seems to have the hot hand out of there? We dont do this often, so we want to fill up the freezers (who doesnt).
wavygravy,
Late may and June is usually the best time for O.I.
Gaffers, yellow fin tuna, big eye tuna and marlins are the normal for that time. But keep in mind that loading the freezer is never guaranteed. Fishing condition change rapidly in and around the stream.
I fish my own boat most of the time but have been on many of the charters from the O.I. fishing center. They are all very good fishermen and everybody I have been with works their butts off to catch fish but some days they just don’t bite for whatever reason, even in the prime time of late may and June.
With that said I will name a few that I have been with but I don’t think you could wrong with any offshore boat there.
They are, in no particular order;
Tuna fever, Pelican, Legacy, Point runner, Trophy Hunter, Rigged up, Hooker, qualifier, smoker, high return, Skiligal, outrigger, sea breeze and Fishing Frenzy.
I have fished with a couple boats over the years and would have to say Greg on the fishinfrenzy or Haywood on Rigged up are two awesome boats. I know if you want Rigged up on a friday or saturday in may or june you better call asap. Good luck.
I've fished with fishnfrenzy about 3 years ago out of OI and 2 years ago with Andy from Good Times out of Hatteras, both great charters and loaded the boat!!
