I caught a 163lb mako on a 114 and loved every minute of it! You will be fine with what you got. Don't buy more gear unless you will use it, really use it, not 4 times a year. Save your money, you are going to need it for fuel!

Thanks again guys. I do love shiny new fishing gear, but the advice about using what I've got for now makes sense. Would need 3 more rigs to pull a full 7 rod spread, but seems like I don't need really top end stuff until the offshore bug really bites.

why wait til next year? start this one and have a good time! once you get out there and find the fish, you will think of fishing all together in another light- will make the bay seem boring! use what you have and upgrade as you get a little more experience.
tld 30's and 50's are fine and reasonable.

I would if I could, but need a trailer and towing rig first. Boat is rack stored now on the Bay, so that's where I have to stay until I enough money accumulates to get both. Plus it wouldn't hurt to HO a few times to better ramp the learning curve.

If you have pile of cash laying around then go for the gold. I am a cheap bastard so I fish with 8 roller rods that I got for 60% off at Gander Mountain a few years ago ($40 each) and 7 Penn 114Hs and 1 Penn 115 that I got off of ebay for $50 or $60. I've caught tuna to 60+#, Dolphin, Mako to 120#, and a 600# blue marlin last summer (not a comfortable fight) on this gear. I am in no hurry to upgrade. I just spent all my $$ on new engines and fishfinder anyway.
