Default Fee approved for driving on the beach in Hatteras

Just read that National Park Service has set rates to drive on the beach in Hatteras. It's going to be $120 for the year and $50 for the week. More info is available at: http://www.nps.gov/caha . Although I think a small fee would be acceptable, this fee is far too high. It can only have a negative impact on obx business. What's next, a fee for looking at the ocean?

    Thumbs down

what a joke, $50 to pull on the beach then turn around, most of the ramps are closed and the ones that are open only give you about 100 yards to drive on. more money for the bird lovers to watch out for the one bird left in the world or there bird poo.

Wonderful. $50 for an afternoon on the beach where we drive a 1/2 mile. We try to go once or twice a year even if its just a long weekend. Always made a trip to the beach in the truck just because we could. They won't get $50 out of me. Sorry.

They will also make you watch a 7 minuet video and they will inspect your vehicle before you are allowed to drive on the beach.

Anything to keep you off the beach !

My guess is that on weekends people will be backed up for miles trying to buy passes, watch the video and get inspected.

Until, of course folks get the picture, give up on the deal and never come back.

The are also going to limit the number of vehicles allowed on the beach. One truck every 20ft. Once they calculate it's full you have to wait for someone to leave before someone gets in. Imagine waiting in line to watch the video, paying your $50, then waiting in a long line waiting for people to leave! Ain't happening. At least not for me.

Also note the new beach fire rule on the FAQ page...you must now get a free permit to have a beach fire. I still can't believe this is for real.

    Default Bigger and Bigger

This is just the beginning. They will move right up the coast. Funny how our beloved government is 15 trillion dollars in debt, over their credit limit, and now they have to hire federal agents and build them brand new buildings costing millions of dollars ( the trailers are just temporary). They are using our own tax money to drive us right out of town, then they turn around and tax us again. I used to love to carry my wife and kids out on the beach, but it will never happen again in Hatteras as long as they charge money for it. I feel bad for Hatteras as they got steamrolled by the government. I'll be spending my tourist money elsewhere. I work to damn hard to give the fooking govt any more than I already do, which I'm pretty sure is more than my fair share anyways. The govt and the sorry azz Audobon society can go to hell.

Is this for the entire Nat. Park or just Hatteras......This will make things even harder for the folks in Ocracoke who are still suffering from the economic impact of that she-devil Ireene.

This is for the entire National Park including Ocracoke and the north side of Oregon Inlet. I also saw on the maps that there will be more areas permanently off limits to vehicles than before. As a footnote the northern beaches of Corolla/Corova are not governed by the NPS so the permit will not be required there.

WHAT A SHAME!!! I know times change and they need to do something but I do not understand the the $120 annual cost...highway robbery without the highway.
