If he's hooked good, grab the jig head. If not, or has a treble hook in his face, us the net. Like Mike said, handle straight up and grab the hoop or the netting, DON'T lift by the handle.

Sounds like you are using the net wrong.... Err lifting wrong would be a better way to put it. Don't lift the fish ith the net parallel to the water. Once the fish is in the net turn the net so the open end is facing the hull and lift that way so the fish hangs in the net under the rim and the net is perpendicular to the water

The judge said, "The law states you cannot gaff a striper anytime". Anytime is dead or alive! He had to pay the fine. SO dont buy a cheap net!
I wounder why this guy didnt get fined! and he got a state record citation too?! looks like a gaff to me..?

I have a two nets made by Cummings. One is a very large one and the other is a medium one I use for smaller fish. I have had the large one since 2003 with no problems. The medium one I have had for a couple of years. The medium one did get a tear in it from toothy flounder. I called and talked to Mr. Cummings sent him the old one and he sent me a new one no charge. Nice company to deal with. And I second on pulling the fish over using the hoop with both hands one in the net. The handle is used just to get fish in the net. But what would I know I have not had to net a fish in some time now. Good luck.

Don't feel bad I have broken a few nets getting too excitd and doing just what yu did. Jus remember after the fish is in the net its not going to jump out. So take your time and do as other have said and you won't break anymore nets.

Indeed was very excited. Fish that broke my net was my first keeper rock ever. Only had a proper boat a little over a year but have spent untold hours over the past 20 yrs throwing everything from rattle traps to clousers at these fish hoping for just a 28" fish. Got a 40" instead!
