I have mine 4 feet apart. You don't always have a crab on every bait but it puts more bait and smell in the water. There are many times though that there is a crab on every bait and the net gets HEAVY before you can dump it............Gary

My snoods are spaced approx. 5ft. When running with clams I use every other snood.

    With a 1200' line and baits every:4' you'll have 300 baits
    @ 5' 240, and at 6' 200 baits.
In the spring 4' is good, in the fall 6' is fine.
    Why not use 5'!
When crabs are running really good 4' is too close, For the the average crabber, I find 5' to be best.

I run 2 1200 ft lines spaced every 4 ft. While this works well it does cost more to bait and i want to change my lines this winter to 5 or 6 ft spacing. In the spring i use clams on differant lines altogether and the spacing is every 12 ft and works well.

My personal lines have snoods spaced every 65". That's due to the distance of my outstretched arms. That yields ~111 snoods for every 600' of line. It is also a comfortable spacing for my dippers to handle easily. When using clams I skip every other snood.

I experimented in the past with snood lines that had snoods spaced 4' apart. I baited one 1200' line with clam bags spaced every 8' and another 1200' line baited every 12'. There never was more than two keepers taken off the line that had the 8' spacing. Most comm crabbers I have talked to bait their clam lines in the area of 12' spacing, rarely closer than 10'. Clams are like cocaine to a crab and it will travel the extra distance to get that fix. Proven fact!
