Depends how big your boat is and how big your dog is. Most dogs would not be comfortable on a hot summer day on a boat while you crab. Mine stays home!.............Gary

A dog will no doubt find ways to get in your way , jump into your lap at wrong time , knock things over , etc but will brighten your day no matter what.

Give them a crab with no claws - they will have a blast. Never hurts to take a shore break every two hours or so.

Years ago ( 1980's ) - it was legal to trotline at night. I'd run a 12 foot rowboat in the Chester and had a crab license. Often got 8-12 packed bushel - it did not leave much free board. Had a Golden Lab mix who went about 90 lbs. One morning we were running back and just before Kent Narrows - a huge yacht throttled up and threw a big rolling / cresting wake. My dog was up front in his normal first mate location and looked back at me as only a dog can. Was not fear in his eyes - he was calling me stupid with that look.

We took that wake full on the chin - no idea how we bounced through without going under. First one was bad but 2nd and 3rd were awful.

Yeah , dogs are fun on a boat.

I too take My Female lab 55lbs. She loves going and hates to be left at home. We most often stop by a beach for a dip to cool off and look around. She seems to know her "spot" on the boat and does not get in the way. She also does NOT like it when it's too choppy

My Chessie only took being bit in the face twice before he figured out how to flip the crab on its back and pick it up close to the base of the apron. I always try to take my dog out whenever I can. I have three and would never take more than one at a time. I will say when it is extremely hot and the water is really warm, you need to really think about your dog. I find frequent swim breaks and cold water from the cooler help out. I also don't like being out much past 9:30 or before 6 on those really hot days so that makes a difference.

My two rottweilers love to fish, I bring them almost every time I go. If I wake up and go fishing without them, my wife gets pissed because the dogs pace around and whine until day break. A couple of buddies and I just bought a little jon boat to crab in the creek behind the house...I don't think those are going to be dog friendly trips. 275lbs of dog might be a bit much in a 14' jon boat, but we'll see. As for black dogs in the sun on a hot day, every hour or so, I just take a couple of buckets of water and throw it on them.

    Thumbs up

I have a 80lb. 7 yr old LAB. She is a good dog.

However, I have taken her crabbing a few times and every time I would drop a trap and toss the float she would jump off the front of my 20 ft jon boat and retrieve the crab trap by snatching the float. One time I did it and she pullled a crab in. I use to take her for rides in both of my boats but I cant keep her in the damn boat. She sees a duck she jumps over. Now that she a little older maybe I will try to take out again this year?
