    Default OI Friday 10th- skunked

Fished out of OI friday. Just me and the wife on board. Ran to the break at the 400. Slick ride out. Temp change from 57 to 76 and a little sloppy in the stream. Fished from the 400 to 650 with nothing to show for it. Maybe 12 boats fishing same area and did not see anyone hooked up. Think most of these boats came up from hatteras. Left a little early due to the boredom. Maybe they turned on late. Nice ride in. Ran up the beach about 15 miles north of the inlet hoping to maybe squeak out a rockfish. Saw one whale and thats about it. Hadn't seen the boat in 3 months so I was perfectly happy to reel in a few dead ballyhoo from time to time.

Bummer, but thanks for the report. Do you know if anyone fished that well-overboard eddy straight out of OI or was everyone on the hard edge of the stream? Thanks.

right there with you, 2 skunks in a row for us, lots of BFT out there but nothing would bite a trolled bait, not even the planer rod, next trip next week the trolling gear is staying in the shed, jigging is the only bite right now,

Didn't hear of anyone fishing the finger thats overboard. Only saw bottle nose dolphin in the stream. No tunas. Marked very little bait on the surface mostly. May try the chunk next week or may just move boat to rudee for a few weeks. Who knows, but will be trying again right after this blow.

Sorry to hear about the skunk. Seems like the bite is not consistent yet. Not to be an armchair quarterback but why not troll until you find them, then if not hitting the trolled baits, send the jigs down to the marks. Good thing about a couple of jigging outfits, they don't take up too much room. Hope you get them next time out.

I heard that Captain Andy of the Good Times caught 6 bluefins on Friday from 70-85inches, don't know where he caught them but it seems they were snapping somewhere. Maybe they fish are farther south than OI and offshore of the 1250 rocks or 280 rocks. Going to try that area this weekend is the weather permits.

I heard Andy had been getting most if not all of his bites on the Green Stick. When I fished during this past short commercial season a few weeks back, most of the boats were sticking for them. Although I have a Stick, mine is currently only set up for Yellowfin. (400lb main line). Bluefin require about double that unless you fish it with break aways which can be tricky to say the least without lots of practice. I am planning to learn the break away system soon but didn't have time then so we opted to just use regular trolling gear. We did good that way also but had to work the marks a lot harder with sometimes making as many as 3 passes while jigging the long baits on the outside of the circle & letting the inside fall deep & then hook up on a speed up after a rigger boil. There would of been plenty of opts with the jigs but we didn't try due to wanting the best chances of getting hooked up fish to harpoon or gaff.

Yesterday (Mon) was the first day recently where they were snapping. Sounds like they are getting going good on the jig. Keep in mind that it is usually right around mid Feb when they really get going so hopefully the real deal is just now starting. Yesterday, today & tomorrow is the time to be out there!! Conditions are perfect, weather is nice & boat pressure will be minimal. I am down here now but doubt I can pull a trip together by tomorrow (crew wise) all my fishing buds need more notice to get off work. I'd bet tomorrow would be the day though if it could happen.
I just got back last night and I'm already planning the next adventure.

Johnny I only found 2 guys that could go tommoro so its not looking good. Looks like I'll have to try again later. Sounds like plenty of future intrest but just not enough lead time for tommoro concidering I just started calling guys this morning.
