    Default stand up rod selection

Just getting started with my off shore addiction and trying to set up a good couple of stand up 50s. Didn't really have the money to go for the gold right off the bat so i purchased two TLD 50 II LRSA reels and spooled them with 700yds of ande 50. Looking at a couple of rods right now but cant quite nail one down. Looking at 5'6" 30-80lb. non roller rods and figured i would ask around to see what is a good reliable rod. Started with a penn mariner stand up- they look great but just not sure if they will hold up, then was lookin at some ocean master and bill fisher stuff. I just know there is alot of junk out there and figured some advice might save me some money in the long run. Thanks in advance, Steven

the penn mariner is a fine rod, its heavy, but will not break down on you, I have a four set on my penn 30T's, no problems, no broken guides etc...

Look at Pinnacle Marine on ebay. Solid rods with high quality components for a fraction of the price. I think I have had 4 or 5 for a few years now and they have performed flawlessly. An all rollered rod is something like $130.

Search Pinnacle marine on The Hull Truth too, you will have a hard time finding anything bad said about them by people who own them.

    Default thanx

the reason i was unsure of the mariners is because the upper reel seat turns on a couple of my 20-50 stand ups that i have already with 6/0s on them. i know they shouldnt and knowing they are made in china just puts icing on the cake. would like to see my money go to an american job ya know. i bougt them thinking that atleast the money was going to an american company atleast-----yea yea i know i bought shimano reels but for $309 brand new on ebay i figured budget came first this time, and i figured even though they are made in malaysia not japan anymore atleast the quality has stayed up unlike the penn reels that have went over to china. i will look around at yalls suggestions and see what catches my eye. thank you guys

Advice: Go to a LOCAL tackle shop. Walk in and tell the man what you want. He will stand behind the product. All of my equipment has come from Hook em and Cook em/Bert. When/if I have an issue I bring it to him and it gets fixed. Internet prices are good but customer service is non=existant

I second Pinnacle Marine ( search THT fishing stuff for sale). I have a complete spread of rods (9) and never an issue.
The 5'6" 30-80lb rods (all rollers) go for about $100 (delivered). They are black & gold and match up with great with the TLD50IIs.

look @ billfisher 50's or 80's turbo guides. With mono there's no need for rollers, just something else to go wrong. either size, $80 @ my shop.

I and most everyone I know that fishes offshore have Penn Tuna Stiks and love them. I have 2 Penn International 50's paired up with them and love'em. I also do have another Penn International 50 paired up with one of the heavy duty high end ocean master rods and I is pretty nice. The only thing I have to say about the ocean master rod is that it is harder to get the salt off it...
