Finishing Wood

I rescued a heavy wooden boat rod from someone's trash. It needs refinishing. I plan to take the dirt off with steel wool but have no idea what kind of varnish or whatever to finish it with. No idea what kind of wood it is but it is six sided. Any ideas?

Any polyeurothane will work fine. You can even stain it before refinishing it with Minwax or whatever brand of stain you want.
