Help,,, the floor is rotting out on my lund alaskan boat. I need a couple of sheets of 5X10 marine plywood. Everybody carries 4x8 but I am having no luck chasing down the bigger stuff. Thanks
In Maryland any "Real" lumberyard would be able to order it for you
but many are probably unwilling.
stay away from the "fake' lumberyards, homecenters etc>
Yukon Lumber in Norfolk used to be able to get that kind of material as a special order. I would bet that there is someplace in Richmond that can.
You can also scarf two pieces together with good quality epoxy and make it as strong as a single sheet. I think that the scarf ratio is like 5:1 or 7:1. If you are going to go the scarf route post back and look some numbers up in a reference book and I will provide some more advice.
Oh and actually I suspect that the 5 foot wide part is going to be more difficult to find.
Doesn't your boat have a keelson that runs front to back under the floor. If so you can piece in the material and do just fine. Just break it on the keelson. Epoxy it down and nail it with #10 bronze ring nails and it will never come up. Also consider the cross frames as a place to break in the long dimension.
Oh and if doesn't have a keelson I would recommend that you call first and go to Gates Custom Milling in Gatesville NC. The last time I went there they had 4 or 5 pieces of 2 x 12 northern white cedar set aside for just such applications.
