    Default Potomac 3/10

We tried today around 10:00-1:30pm in the Potomac up near the western edge of Saint Mary's river. We spotted quite a bit of marks around there but we didn't manage to have much luck again today. Most of the marks were suspended around 40-35'. There could have been some smaller bait schools located around as well.

The water temps were around 47 degrees.

Either its still too cold, the full moon the past two nights has kept them eating at night or we need some more luck on our side.

Remobeater, Thanks for giving it a try and the report. Few more weeks and I plan to be out there and trying some preseason C&R fishing myself.

    Mushy, Dave,

Glad to know one was hungry enough to take a bait on March 12th. Dave look forward to seeing You and the rest of the gang out in the Potomac in just a few weeks. I plan to put Special-K over on Friday April 6th and do some C&R the next two weekends, weather allowing, before the opener on the 21st. Larry called this morning and is getting geared up to put Valley Girl back in on March 31.

Mushy, nice job. How did you have the umbrella rigged and how many lines were you using? I'm assuming until we get more rods on our boat, we'll get skunked quite a few of these days with 4 or 5 rods and no planer boards. We ran 6" teasers and lures in chart/lime, white, and storm menhaden, plus a couple tandems with chart, white, and purple heads.

There's a couple that live in Lewisetta (Russ and Jaquie), they always pull 6 boat rods, no planer boards and they consistantly catch fish. So, you can catch fish without boards and there are benefits to not having boards. One is getting turned back around and staying on the fish.
I was on someone else's boat the other day as I have sold mine. We use the same basic setups. The umbrella we caught that fish on was behind a 28oz inline weight with a leader about 10' - 12' long between the weight and umbrella. Depth depends on were we're marking fish. More than likely 40 to 60 feet back. There are charts available that give a basic depth that a particular weight runs when let out a particlar distance. I had these posted in my boat and tried to match these to the depth that I mark fish. I'm still learning myself, but that's some of what I do. Give me a call if I can help. 540-809-5414 Did I mention I'm boatless right now......... :)

Ya, I've been messing around with line distances and weights, I usually go weightless on the umbrellas since they are enough of a pain. I put mine out between 250' and 315' to get the depth. I'm assuming they will be pretty deep with that much out since that's how I've caught before. We used to have trouble finding fish but would still occasionally pick up one or two, now the problem is usually getting them to bite once we've found a school.
