They are here but not in very good numbers yet. Couple a day is about all that can be expected.

Shad were caught in the DC section of the Potomac last week.

I thought it was illegal to catch shad this year?

    Nope.

Just illegal to keep herring and American shad. Stay below the fall line and you're OK.

Caught a few again this evening. Not close to hot yet but a few fish here and there.

I spent about 90 minutes today (Sunday) approx 1/4 mile North/West of the Rt 1 Bridge on the south river bank casting into steady current with darts and a panther martin size 1. I caught a couple bluegill in the slower sheltered water behind some big rocks, but no shad. There were several guys along the bank and I only saw 1 shad caught, and it was foul hooked. I also noticed about 5 Heron in strategic places between me and the Rt 1 bridge, but did not see any striking at fish in the water. I saw several anglers closer to the bridge and a couple more south/east of the bridge wading out thigh to waist deep, but didn't see any catch.

Skies were overcast with light, but steady winds blowing from the SE to NW (upstream). Sat night/Sun morning rain didn't seem to add much flow. USGS had it up about a tenth to 3.1ft around midday, and the water was still pretty clear.

Even with only a few bluegill C&R, it sure beat workin!

Perhaps another week or so... we'll see what the forecast cooler nights have in store for us (if anything?)

    Tight Lines,
    Dave

I fished above the bridge first thing Saturday morning with similar results. Moved below the bridge and killed them. Almost every shad wanted the spoon. I ended up with around 60 in four hours fishing a dart spoon tandem......only four took the dart and two of those were doubles.
