I like flouro leader, but I usally am fishing a silgle hook and live bait on a slip rig.... Not sure it really matters when the bite is hot??? but i have outfished others some days when that was the only difference
I've gotten into the habit of just using whatever 30lb mono i have on hand to tie up very simple flounder rigs. Red hook, maybe two or three beads and that's it. Well in a recent transaction i ended up with some 30lb Jehro 'nylon leader' and thought i'd try it for my flounder rigs. it is more opaque than clear mono would be and quite a bit thicker. I'm thinking the thickness will translate into tangle resistance and abrasion resistance but I never really had issues with either using green 30lb big game. Also i had bought a couple flounder rigs at a tackle shop in Va beach and they apparently used the same stuff so maybe it's good?
Any thoughts on this?

I've tied my own flounder rigs too for a long time, and I also use 30 lb line most of the time. I've even dropped down to 20 lb & see little difference.Mine are more involved, bucktail teaser, a couple of beads & a spinner blade. I've used different brands of mono & some fluoro, and frankly don't see much difference in catch rates. If the fish are there & biting, I don't think the leader material makes much difference. It's certainly possible that at times it might, so I still tie up some with fluoro & some with mono, but most are tied with mono simply because it's cheaper. I have seen days when a bare hook with bait out fished the dressed rigs, so I guess it really depends on what mood they're in.
You got that right Jim!!!! Its thier world and we are just fishing in it??????????
Yep just when we think we have it all figured out, they just don't cooperate!

That's why we call it "fishing" and keep coming back for more!
How about it.
I was pretty much set in my 'no skirts, flash, etc needed 90% of the time' routine but then I see Jim with the exact opposite experience and I wonder what am I missing!
Maybe it just doesn't matter when you've got Gulp!
I always used flouro and my buddy (who I always outfish) made fun of me telling me stupid fish that live in the mud can't see it...so he tied his minnow directly to braid and proceeded to outfish me 2-1...told him it was a fluke, did it again the next day...after that, I find it hard to believe it matters...
I don't think flouro will buy u anything inshore...probably most of the garnish is cuz we enjoy it.
I've seen flouro out fish regular mono but IMHO - it was not due to flouro being less visible.
My theory - the flouro is slightly stiffer and lays out straighter then mono. Most of us use mono off the 1/4 lb spools and it often retains the tight coils. Ever notice it seems to tangle ? True leader material is sold in coils - roughly 1 foot diameter.
Flounder do have good eye sight but I do not think they are leader shy. My dad used to make Flounder spreader bars from wire coat hangers. They were about 16 inches wide - short snelled hook went on each arm and a 2 to 6 oz torpedo sinker went in middle. Gaudy brass snap swivels were looped on each arm.
In clear water - Flounder had to see the whole rig and weight just inches from the strip of Bluefish on the hook. Dad put one spinner hook and one plain - some days one out caught the other. More then once - a single greedy Flounder took both hooks.
I caught a few Flounder about 20 inches right at Hooper's Island lighthouse few years ago. They hit a silver wire leader 7/0 hook ( pre package with plastic over wire ) with a strip of Spot - intended for Bluefish. That rig literally gleamed in the water.
What could be more mundane than dying of old age or of natural causes when there is death by misadventure to be pursued ? Skip
