Get NGK plugs champions are junk also sounds like carb needs work
I'm hoping to get some answers...I have a 2003 Johnson 8hp 2 stroke short-shaft. I have been using it on a 14' jon for crabbing. I'm having issues with the motor stalling at lower RPM. I have to rev a bit higher to keep it running, which adversely affects the runs on my trot line. The motor runs great at 3/4 to full throttle, with no hesitation, and brings my boat right up on plane. I use a 50:1 mix, but something just don't seem right at the lower speed. What are some things I can check? Do I make a throttle adjustment? I want to change the plugs (champion QL86C) and wires for the new season, and possibly clean the carb, but I would like to make sure I'm not making any mistakes (I don't want to foul a new set of plugs). Am I missing anything?![]()

Mike is rite champion plugs are junk. Don't over torque the new plugs in to tight, alumium heads will strip [been their done that] 16 to 18 foot lbs if you can get your hands on a torque wrench. Might try useing some fuel additive too. star\tron works great and may clean out those carbs. Good luck.
assuming the Idle speed is set right ,,the next thing to check is the low speed carb circuit--dirt,ethanol related gunk ,etc
If your motor has a decal that says 100:1 you can run that mixture BUT you must buy oil that says it will satisfy 100:1 lubrication demands, not just normal TCW-3.
I had same problem with my 1976 JOHNSON 25HP. I changed plug to one step hotter and use 89 octain at a 50/1 mix it idles like a champ now
