Piney Ron Reservoir

I might take my son fishing tomorrow at Piney Run in Sykesville, MD. As you might be able to tell from my board name, I almost exclusively chum for rockfish in the Bay. However, boat won't start, possibly an ethanol/fuel issue. My question, I live in Eldersburg and can rent a boat at Piney Run. is anything biting and does anyone have recommendations. Thanks, RFC.

go real early in the morning or late in the afternoon / evening. Not much happening in the middle of the day.

You can rent both v-bottom and jon style aluminum boats. They sell minnows at the rental office. It is best if you bring a battery and transom mount trolling motor. The boats don't have anchors either... I have caught bass, crappie, yellow perch, catfish, and stripers there. There will be a lot of boats out on Sunday. Live bait will be your best bet. Minnows for bass, crappie, and perch / chicken livers for cats and the occasional striper. Stripers can be tough to catch unless you have alot of experience on the lake. The old tymers troll bucktails and deep divers.

You can get some decent catfish in the channel at the edge of the wildlife management area (closed to fishing and boating). The drops along the banks of the same area are good for crappie and bass.

Go straight across the lake from the boat ramp, and than hang a left along the shoreline. Go off the first point about 20 yards, anchor up and sink some bait about 5' under a bobber. There are usually good panfish right in that area (there is an old roadbed that runs right along there, you can see it on the oppossite shoreline).

Also, you may be able to find some jumbo bluegills spawning this time of year, don't be afraid to get in the backs of the coves to look for beds. Another fun thing is to go fish the part of the lake towards the dam..it's rockier and you can catch some redears, etc..
