Structure Scan Sonar
Recently purchased a Lowrance HDS-8 bundle, which includes LSS-1 Structure Scan Sonar. I have been in contact with Navico, the parent company of Lowrance and Simrad, relating to installation of the unit. I have learned through this contact that Lowrance on March 16th announced the next generation of structure scan technology, the LSS-2 Structure Scan Sonar. Parts for the LSS-1 are now in short supply and will likely be difficult to obtain since manufacturing is now focused on the LSS-2, which has a different transducer and different transducer mounting bracket. If you are planning to purchase Structure Scan Sonar, you may want to consider purchasing the new LSS-2 unit instead of existing LSS-1 units which may still be available in marine stores or through online purchases. The below announcement was reported earlier this month in the Boat and Electronics forum of Tidal Fish:
NEW! Lowrance Structure Scan 2 / LSS-2
Lowrance has introduced their new Structure Scan.

No parts necessary for the LSS-1. It's a module and a transducer. If an LSS-1 failed today under warranty it would be replaced with an LSS-2. The LSS-2 has a new transducer that will also work with the LSS-1. Power cables the same. Ethernet cables are the same. An out of warrantly LSS-1 (like the one I have) would be replaced by an LSS-2 (for a fixed price), if I ever had a problem.
There are some great deals now for the LSS-1, which works great. The LSS-2 is just an updated version.
The LSS-2 is not even on the market yet..
Thanks for the clarification and additional information re the compatibility of the LSS-2 transducer and the LSS-1 module, something that I was unaware of and had not found in my online research of the LSS-2 introduction. I should have used the term components instead of parts, since the LSS-1 package should include the LSS-1 module, transducer, power cable, ethernet cable, transducer mounting bracket and mounting bracket hardware. The LSS-1 transducer mounting bracket is currently out of stock at Navico and in the online marine stores I checked, currently listed as being on back order with an unknown future delivery date. If making my purchase decision now, I would strongly consider purchasing the updated LSS-2 since it is currently state of the art and in full production for projected market availability of April 2012. Just one angler's opinion.
As far as I can tell the transducer mounting bracket is the same for the LSS-1 & LSS-2. Only major difference is the new LSS-2 transducer is about 4" longer than the LSS-1. And from what I have seen tested will give close to the same HD quality when used with the LSS-1.
I use two transducers with my LSS-1. Get great results. Not in my short term plans to replace what I have now with the LSS-2. But if I didn't already have I would also go for the LSS-2. It's not really very expensive as far as marine electronics go. Just think how much it would cost if it were a Garmin!!
Most any dealer should have that bracket. Have seen on EBAY.
