    Default Mate In Training

Capt. Ryan Rogers, skipper of the Midnight Sun charter boat and founder of the Casey Rogers Rockfish Tournament has come up with an interesting way to get kids involved it saltwater fishing. It's call the Mate In Training (MIT) Fishing Instatute. What it will be is a hands on training class for young anglers. Two sessions will be held, one in the tide water area and one at Smith Point. I think this is a neat idea. If you might be interested in finding out the details, contact Capt. Ryan at www.fishmidnightsun.com or call him at 804-453-5812.

Capt. Rogers is the author of the 'Catch of The Day' column in the Woods & Waters Magazine. Ryan is a frequent speaker at the Northern Neck Anglers Club meetings and seminars. I have also been out with him many times as a customer and mate so I know that he knows his stuff.

Couldn't ask for a better Skipper for the program! I wish my boy was older and could get involved in this.

Here are some more details about the event.

The age group is 11 to 16 years. It could tilt 1 year +or- depending on the situation.
There will be classes in the morning and after that fishing for 4 to 5 hours on the Midnight Sun boat.
There is at this point a limit of 8 kids per class. The limit is so that the kids can get individual atention and guidence from the captain or mate.
Each kid can bring 1 parent (parents do not participate in the classes or fishing).
The first class will be at Virginia Beach July 16 - 18.
The second class will be at Smith Point on July 30 - August 1.
If needed a third class will be scheduled for Smith Point.
The fee for the three day event is $450 per kid.
Everything needed except sun screen and sun glasses will be provided for the kids.

This is a unique opportunity for young people to get some very valuable experience from a top flight crew.

I'm 20 but was born on February 29th, therefore I'm 5. I'm still young enough to go right?!

    Capt. Dave -

Please let me know if Ryan ever decides to hold an "Old Mate in Training" program, say with a minimum age of 60.

John, I'll ask him sometime. He would probably call it the Geezer in Training.
