Listen to john he knows what he is talking about. He helped me on another forum with my force motor which i recently sold and switched to an evinrude. thanks again john and good luck cpcullum. Do yourself a favor and buy a manual and learn how to work on the carbs, its not that bad and 90% of 2 stroke deaths are from dirty carbs leaning out not providing fuel which is where your lubrication comes from.

Yeah, I just got a quote to clean the carbs and replace fluids, $300+. If I can save myself $300 by doing this myself then I think I will buy the manual and learn. (I'm a car nut so I think I can work my way through this, can't be that hard).

John, by chance your not in the Bel Air area are ya?

If you have a remote tank you could try running the engine off it.This could help isolate the problem to the engine/carb. and eliminate fuel or restrictions issues from the boats tank/lines.I agree that most likely is a carb possibly fuel pump issue. The fuel pump is easy to check with a vacuum/pressure gauge (at least on a Yamaha) I had a lean running Yamaha (that would actually backfire thru the intake) that turned out to be a fuel pump. The condition John is referring to (spitting and popping) is sometimes referred to as a "lean sneeze" and if not corrected can lead to much more serious engine damage. This site contains a lot of useful info also.

Good luck with your new boat.Once you get caught up on the maintenance I am sure you will find that 2-stroke to be a great engine, that is fairly simple to work on.

Sorry CP, I am in Davidsonville.

If you buy a manual, try to stay away from the Seloc brand. If you can't find an OEM on ebay, buy a Clymer and you will be ok.

If you are a gear head, you should be able to clean the carbs and set the floats. Trust me, it is nothing like a double pumper holly. There are numerous parts houses on line and carb kits usually cost around $10-15 bucks. Fuel pump diaphrams usually run about $2 to $4 and are easy to change.

If you get hung up, email me at johnandnanc182@yahoo.com and I'll help you out.

    Regards,
    John

Water may be getting to your spark plugs and coils. May need new cowling or seals, or new spark plug wires and coils. What happens when you come off plane slowly and raise the engine up as you do? Can you prevent the engine from stalling if you take easy? Does it start right away afterwards? If it takes a while, I suspect you are getting water inside the cowling and it's shorting something. Engine could be too low on the transom too.

John, I just picked up an OEM manual for $28. Looking for rebuilt kits now.

Salmo, I could be sitting in my driveway (With muffs) and it will start spitting at idle. Only way I can prevent it from stalling is to lift the lever.

Once in the water and at WOT, she runs great. I will be replacing the plugs, cleaning the carbs, replacing lower unit fluid and replacing fuel.

The reason it is running better in the water is the back pressure on the exhaust is causing a richer mixture.

I have seen fuel squeeze bulbs fail and I have also had replacements fail (brand new). They usually fail closed...
