This is the first srping I can remember (and my notebook bears this out) that I haven't even tried to catch shad this late. Last year I'd had several good days by April 7 already.

Danny I hate to tell you this but I think that island is going to stay an island for a good long while. I was at Fletcher's before it got too high and I still could not get over there. I'm wondering if there was some erosion this past year as I don't recall it being that scoured out in the past. And there is more deadfall than ever making the journey there even more treacherous than in the past.

I hope that spot is accessible when the flow falls because it is one of the few great shore spots for fly anglers down stream.

I fished from the island you mentioned for a couple hours after work this evening. Made it over dry, but got a little wet on the way back (water was about 1.5 higher?tide?). Tried both fly and spinning with darts, and only had one head shake. The visibility was pretty bad. The deadfall is freaking hazardous. Almost every time I go down there, I end up with some scrapes..It was very nice fishing in the rain with the mist coming off the river. Almost like steelheading.. Some shore bait dunkers were catching perch in the cove as I was leaving.

Fletchers doesn't look like the type of place that has a tide, but it does. Even though the current flow never changes direction, the tide still ebbs & flows between 1' to 3' as far upstream as Center Rock which is located above Chain Bridge and the concrete platform. The flow never changes directions but it does slow down at high tide. Not sure how tide affects the bite at Fletchers and CB.
