    Default Disappointing charter boat experience

Some of my buddy's invited me to fish on the Marlin Mania last week with them, in Hatteras. I have always fished at Oregon inlet, but what the heck I thought I would give it a try. The fishing was fairly slow for us, but what bothered me was the pure ignorance by the deckhand. When my buddy asked him if he would mind not blowing cigarette smoke into his face, he told us if we didn't like it to get on another boat. Now I have worked in the Portsmouth police department for 20 years and shouldn't feel like I'm at work when paying so much money to charter a boat. I was very disappointed with the condition of the tackle, it seemed like every reel was either broken or on the verge of breaking. When i asked the deckhand why the handle on my reel was not turning he told me that i was an idiot and didnt know how to use it. He also chewed us out for slightly back lashing a reel, and didn't let anyone touch anything after that. Needless to say it was a long day after that. At the end of the day the captain and mate were very demanding in getting paid immediately. Like I said earlier I have been chartering at Oregon inlet for nearly 20 years and have never had a bad experience.

Hope you guys did not tip him. Not getting a tip sends a very clear message.

Hmm....I've fished out of HI and had my boat a few slips from MM. I've heard good things about the boat and captain. Sounds like the mate is a serious douchebag and the captain didn't have the cojones to rein him in.

Thanks for the Info. Posts like these are unfortunate but just as useful as endorsements. Did you make the captain aware of the issues. Sometimes that's all it takes. Like the guy above said. I hope you didn't tip him.

Too bad the mate didn't said this "When my buddy asked him if he would mind not blowing cigarette smoke into his face, he told us if we didn't like it to get on another boat. " before you left the dock. Captains can not afford mates that talk/treat the customers that way.

    Thats CRAZY!!!

I suggest you call the captain and voice your displeasure with his mate. He may already be gone. I've never heard anything bad about that boat before, only praises.

    Good Luck!
